History

fonYou was founded in Barcelona, Spain in 2006.

Fernando Núñez-Mendoza, Albrecht von der Recke and Clemens Rossberg, three entrepreneurs with extensive experience in the telecom, internet and technology sectors, founded fonYou to come up with a new way of bringing mobile telephony services to end customers. This lead to the creation of fonYou’s proprietary business model called “Online Mobile Telephony”, which aims at putting end customers in total control of their mobile phone services:

In 2008 fonYou signed an MVNO agreement with Telefonica and in July 2009 successfully launched its Cloud Telephony Services as a mobile operator in the Spanish market.

At the end of 2009, following the enthusiastic response from fonYou’s home market in Spain, the company created a licensing model so other mobile operators from anywhere in the world could also enable their customers to benefit from the service. To that end, fonYou packaged its business model, technology (the OMT-9000 Platform) and Cloud Telephony Services into a turnkey solution and started to offer it to mobile operators around the world.

In January 2011 fonYou’s first client, South African mobile operator Cell C, successfully launched “MyTools”, a customized version of fonYou’s Cloud Telephony Services based on the OMT-9000 Platform.

Today, fonYou has a dual business model: On the one hand, the company acts as technology provider for other telecom operators and, on the other hand, as mobile operator in Spain. fonYou’s MVNO operations are an important part of its overall strategy as they allow the company to develop and trial new and innovative services with real customers. In February 2011, for example, fonYou announced the launch of its first smartphone application which not only makes the company’s Cloud Telephony Services available on iPhones but also lets users “download” a new mobile number directly from the iTunes App Store.

fonYou has been funded by its founders, local investors and several Spanish banks through ICO-backed loans. ICO, Instituto de Crédito Oficial, is a public sector institution connected to the Spanish Ministry of Commerce. Furthermore, fonYou has recently been awarded a prestigious NEOTEC II loan, an interest-free credit from CDTI (Centro para el Desarrollo Tecnológico Industrial), another Spanish public institution, linked to Spain’s Science and Innovation Ministry. fonYou is wholly owned by its management and local industrial investors from Catalonia, Spain.
