A new breed of mobile operator
fonYou was set up in March 2006 by three entrepreneurs with extensive experience in the telecom and in the internet sector. fonYou’s goal is to launch a new breed of mobile operator that integrates mobile telephony with internet-based services.
During the last two years the company’s management team has worked intensively to design the details of that concept. The result is fonYou, the mobile operator for the internet era that gives its customers complete control over the services they use. The guiding principles that fonYou has applied for the development of this concept are: Ease of use, addressing customer needs and high quality customer care.
In March 2008, fonYou signed a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) agreement with Telefónica that enables the company to offer mobile telephony services in Spain and to put its plans into action.
fonYou is a so-called “full” MVNO, i.e. a real telecom operator with its own core network infrastructure. To put it in a simplified way all that fonYou rents from Telefónica are its antennas, but not the rest of its network infrastructure. This has far-reaching implications: By controlling its own network elements, fonYou has complete liberty and independence to innovate and to develop new services and this is one of the most important distinguishing features compared to its competitors. In fact most new operators in Spain and in the rest of Europe are not really telecom operators, but merely Service Providers that do not have their own network infrastructure and that are therefore very much dependent on their host network operators when it comes to developing and introducing new services or even just modifying the existing ones.
The business concept that fonYou has developed is applicable and relevant not only to the Spanish market, but also in many other countries. After launching operations first in Spain towards the end of 2008, the company will therefore initiate its international expansion to introduce fonYou in other markets.
